The addition of 16 extra teams to make the total 48 has led to changes in the group stage, with 12 groups being organised to consist of 4 teams in each. The top two teams in every group will automatically advance to the knockouts. What makes this year different however is the inclusion of eight of the highest ranked third-placed teams also progressing. This will be determined by factors such as points, goal difference, goals scored, and their world rankings, meaning 32 teams will take part in the knockout stage for the first time in the tournament's history.
